luma sentr
False alarms turn into habits of ignoring
Dead batteries go unnoticed
Hard to tell where the dead detectors are
Alerts feel more like punishment than protection
WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY
One hub that unites every detector
Alerts that feel human, not hostile
Light, voice, clarity
A product people interact with daily, not only in chaos
EXPLORATION SKETCHES
Exploring form and refining concepts with sketches. I wanted this design to feel like a character. I wanted this to feel like the user would be living in a sci-fi movie.
It was important to me that it seemed like it was more than just a safety product, and more like something you’d want to have in your home.
I pulled from pop culture for my inspirations, pulling from Star Wars, Adventure Time, Suzume, and even Japanese folklore.
FINALIZING DESIGN
Clear direction:
A single glowing “eye”
Four steady legs
A body that feels like a friendly lantern
Balanced between character and home object.
Based on “Chōchin obake” Lantern yokai.
ANIMATION
Here’s a simple animation to show how luma walks/runs.
